Madré Marais was born in Bloemfontein in 1987 and grew up on a farm in the Free State. She has a honour's degree in linguistics and a master's degree in creative writing, both from UFS. Marais is a subeditor for Volksblad’s Central Local Newspapers. She is the mother of a baby boy. Luistervink is her debut collection of short stories.
