Karel Schoeman
Human & Rousseau
A reissue of an Afrikaans masterpiece that received several awards and was translated into several languages. It was favourably compared by some reviewers to Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain.
Schoeman’s novel is set at the end of the nineteenth century. Versluis, a middle-aged visitor from the Netherlands, comes to Bloemfontein for his health – he hopes to recover from TB. In his awkward attempts to try to come to grips with this strange country, he eventually gains a new understanding of life. And he prepares for man’s inevitable destiny: death – “another country”.
