The little wise one: African tales of the hare | Children's Fiction
Phyllis Savory
Tafelberg
The hare – crafty and debonair, unpredictable and indestructible – is depicted in African mythology as a past master of mischief, usually at the expense of others. No wonder he was called not only the Little Wise One, but also the Clever One by the story-tellers of the African continent.
This substantial collection of authentic folktales about the hare in all his guises was gathered by Phyllis Savory over a period of more than eighty years. Many were jotted down while listening to the story-tellers around the evening fires on her father's farm in Zimbabwe during the first decade of the previous century. Others were told to her by missionaries, carriers and attendants on her travels throughout Southern Africa.
Some of the stories in this collection first appeared in Phyllis Savory's classic series of Fireside Tales. Others were brought together for the first time in the first edition of the title, published in 1990.
These timeless tales are guaranteed to delight any generation of children and their parents.
