Die tyd van die kombi's | Autobiography
Koos (A.) Kombuis
Human & Rousseau
This maverick musician’s first autobiography, Seks & Drugs & Boeremusiek became an iconic title. In his new book he writes with the same honesty and humour about his memories of the rebellious Voëlvry movement, a rock ’n roll movement by a group of musicians which jolted many Afrikaans people out of their known certainties. As the movement gained momentum during their countrywide tour they won the Afrikaans youth over to their struggle against the government and apartheid. Koos Kombuis has again written a memoir that is witty, touching, horrific, amusing, confused, extravagant, provocative.
He says: “I want to answer the question which I have been evading for such a long time, the question which every journalist I know and half of my friends (those who are still alive) have been asking me regularly the last few years: “Was Voëlvry and all those things worth it in the end?” And: “What do you think of Afrikaans music?” or: “Tell us some stories from the Alternative Movement”.
“I only started with this book about two years ago and it went very slowly in the beginning because it was such a traumatic process. But here it is now: My story, my speculations, my thoughts about the subject, my complete confessions of my involvement in the Voëlvry “rebellion”.
