Gilbert Gibson
Tafelberg
Gilbert Gibson’s latest collection is an extremely ambitious project, and one that delivers enormous discoveries. It is a complex plot of Biblical language and images, literary references and the physiology of the eye.
The collection as a whole can be seen as an encyclopedia of the art of writing, and the art of writing then being the art of sight and observation. With regard to content as well as the complex syntax and word use, it is to a great extent an investigation into the neurology of poetry, or rather how the poetic impulses of the eye branch out by way of the neural network of language to be projected on the blank surface of the page as a poem. Astounding and endlessly intriguing, as befits true poetry.
