Eben Venter establishes eroticism as the leitmotif of Begeerte ("Desire") in the very first sentence. Although this new Karoo novel is first and foremost a record of a woman's life, it is also a record of a family's life in South Africa in the 1940s. The woman is Madelein, a woman who remains loyal and forgiving towards a husband who cannot resist the sensuality of women.
