André P. Brink

Human & Rousseau

An epic novel about the history of slavery in the Cape, and the complex and troubled relations between master and slave. Based on a real incident, an uprising by slaves in 1825 on farms in the Cape hinterland, the novel is a "chain of voices": The main voice is that of the slave Galant, but we hear the stories and "testimony" of many other characters - white and brown, master and slave. Artur Lundkvist of the Swedish Academy described this book as "possibly the greatest portrayal of slavery ever written".
