Homecoming: Voorkamer Stories (II) | Short Stories & Fiction Anthologies
Herman Charles Bosman
Human & Rousseau
Once again the Dwarsberg farmers gather in Jurie Steyn’s voorkamer to discuss some of the salient historical relating to an item of local gossip. Whether the topic is go-slow strikes, lost cities, mothers-in-law or the end of the world, Gysbert van Tonder, Chris Welman, At Naudé and the others would far rather discuss it than plough their lands.
This concluding set of Voorkamer stories contains forty-three pieces in all, nearly double the number in the volume it replaces (A Bekkersdal Marathon). But twelve items have never been collected, and one “Mental Trouble”) is entirely new. Homecoming also includes the moving titular piece from October 1951 that turned out to be Bosman’s last.
The pieces appear here in their original sequence, uncut and freshly edited, with an introduction and notes ont he text. Homecoming also contains an index to all the stories, essays and poems gathered in the 14 titles of the Anniversary Edition. This title in the Anniversary Edition series is edited by Craig MacKenzie.
