About this book

Wildvreemd (ePub) | General Fiction

Carina Stander

Nine years ago a stranger of uncertain origin moved into the Ruig – a stretch of forest at the river’s edge in the Waterberg of Limpopo. In the years thereafter she became an extraordinary bee-keeper and became locked in a single-handed struggle with illegal hunters. Once a month she would walk down to the village, but after all these years she still got the gossipers’ tongues wagging: The fire, she caused it . . . She poisons little boys . . . The mark on her throat, that’s where the hyena bit her, that’s why she’s mute . . . She’s a dangerous woman. A witch, a whore. Mad.

In Wildvreemd eight first-person narrators reveal their guilt and fragility. Each individual has a unique weakness and individual strength, but the big common denominator is a remarkable weirdness that makes each remain an outsider in their own freakish way – a wildvreemdeling. This is a story about slaughter, the unspeakable, and about freedom, especially freedom.

Carina reads from Wildvreemd.
