On 24 November 1949 Utte Reuter arrives in Cape Town. She carries with her a bunch of letters and a collection of Rilke’s poetry. She is due to marry Christiaan Hofmeyr. Their union enables Utte to start a new life, leaving behind the horror of the Second World War. But she struggles to find her true place in a world steeped in Afrikaner tradition and soon longs for home, a place that has been changed for ever.
Utte tells her story from her last home, a retirement home for Alzheimer patients.
