The main character and narrator, Maud, has had a very active imagination ever since she was a child.
One day Marike de Klerk, former first lady of South Africa, appears to Maud at an intersection, and this is the start of a brief but magical friendship.
It seems that seven years after Marike has been murdered she is still in the Waiting Room, and there is a matter she needs to address before she can move on. Interwoven with her meetings with Marike, Maud tells about her real life: motherhood, her relationships and loves.
