When her elderly mother disappears, Katrien decides to drive back along the roads that her father helped build when she was a child. It becomes a journey into the past, as she travels through the towns where her family lived in temporary road work camps. It is there that her father, the operator of a road grader, taught her about life with his stories about the road works. And where her mother’s problems began, as she fought a bitter war against the poverty of the camps. On the open road Katrien realises the truth of her father’s words: “To know where you are going, you must first know where you are coming from”.
