Loit Sôls
Kwela
In this new collection of poems the well-known performance poet and musician Loit Sôls continues exploring themes previously feautured in his work. The title Die faraway klanke vanne hadeda (The faraway sounds of a hadeda) refers to two worlds: one where the sounds of a hadeda can only be heard from afar on the Flats, where life is bleak and harsh, and where gangsters rule both on the street and at home. This is in contrast to another world, where people have picnics on the beach, bask in the sunlight of wealth; and where violence never seems to threaten on the doorstep. There are poems about love, and loss, and also about bergies and sunsets. Some of the most evocative ones deal with gangsters and the effect of gangsterism on society, especially on women. It is a very moving – and accessible – collection of poetry.
