Maria is a young girl from a town near Vlissingen in the Netherlands. She’s pregnant and her stepfather sends her to her aunt in the Dutch countryside where she has her baby – away from the prying eyes of the town where her stepfather is the reverend. Her aunt lovingly welcomes her and never asks about the baby’s father. The local reverend, Reijer, visits Maria regularly in spite of the fact that she’s having a baby out of wedlock.
After some interesting yet heartbreaking events Maria finally learns to love her daughter, Mara. In the process she also makes peace with God as a caring and loving Father – the opposite of what she’s come to know. This is a story about love and loss and how love triumphs over all.
