Kruispad | General Fiction
Kruispad is the nucleus of Deon Opperman’s major TV trilogy about the Afrikaner’s path in South Africa. It shows exactly at what point fundamental change started and how the Afrikaner reacted to that.
In Kruispad he focuses on 1994 and what the loss of power meant for the Afrikaners. It is a tale of joy, sorrow, pride and humiliation, which unfolds in a climax as seldom seen on TV. The novel version encapsulates this emotional material masterly in words. The piece revolves around Sophia and Mariana, the two daughters of a well-off farmer, Soois van Rooyen, and his wife, Mart. Sophia is married to the very wealthy FG van den Berg, and Mariana to the poor, narrow-minded Andries Landman.Though FG and Andries both lose their economic status after the elections of 27 April 1994, it is their respective sons, FG Junior and Henk, who are stuck with the legacy of apartheid.
