Maja has to adjust to life in a roadworks camp in the Kavango after her husband, an engineer, is assigned to the project. Their relationship is troubled by Louis’ inability to confront his army experiences and the stress of running the camp, where the pressure of deadlines and men cooped up on their own for too long often leads to violence. But Maja has her own secret. Only Phineas, the camp caretaker, knows something of Maja’s troubles, and he soon becomes her confidant and friend. Before she followed Louis to the camp, there had been Alex, a sensitive artist, the opposite of her difficult and often absent husband. In the Caprivi, Maja is forced to confront her past and present to find a way forward.
