Ivan Cohen
Biographical info

Ivan Cohen went to school at Dale College in King William’s Town and graduated in medicine from the University of Cape Town in 1969. He was appointed as head of the Campus Health Service of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 1976. Between 1978 and 1980 he was the recipient of The Snaar Viljoen Scholarship, awarded by Wits, for physiological research.

In 1984 Dr Cohen founded Run/Walk For Life, a scientifically based exercise programme to promote the health and fitness of previously sedentary individuals, and was its CEO for the first twelve years. Today, the organisation has over 100 branches throughout South Africa and has changed the lives of thousands of members. As a result of the success of the organisation, he was nominated as a finalist in the Annual South African Jewish Business Achiever of the Year Award in 1992.

Dr Cohen had two successful medical practices – in Umhlanga Rocks and later in Sandton. He was an avid mountaineer and took part in triathlons, the Argus Cycle Tour and the Comrades Marathon.
