Alexander Strachan
Biographical info

Alexander Strachan spent his youth in Ladysmith in the north of KZN. In the erstwhile South African Defence Force he became a member of the reconnaissance commando, generally known as the recces. He took part in many SADF operations, also in Angola. After studying languages at the University of the Free State (and later literary theory at Unisa) he became professor of Zulu at the University of Zululand.

Upon his resignation he took up writing full-time and continued his game farming. His first book is a collection of short stories, ’n Wêreld sonder grense, for which he received the Eugène Marais prize. Die Jakkalsjagter was Strachan’s debut novel, which brought him the De Kat/Potpourri prize. His following novels were Die Werfbobbejaan and Agter die suikergordyn. He speaks Zulu fluently and in his spare time occupies himself with industrial theatre that is produced entirely through the medium of the indigenous languages.
