Frederik van Zyl Slabbert

Academic and one-time opposition leader Dr Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert (born 2 March 1940) was a South African icon. Since he left Parliament in protest against the slow pace of reform, he has been central to a number of influential political initiatives, from IDASA, which he founded, to the Dakar Initiative, the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and one of the first Black Economic Empowerment deals.

He served as director on the board of FirstRand Ltd as well as the OSI New York. He was chairman of of Adcorp Ltd and Caxton Ltd.

Dr Slabbert passed away on 14 May 2010.
